It was an unorthodox design, with a pod-and-boom layout and a cruciform tail that had its horizontal stabiliser mounted atop the boom with a large ventral fin extending below it. The monoplane wing was mounted high, on a pylon above the fuselage pod, and braced to the fuselage with V-struts. Two open cockpits were provided in tandem, with the rear cockpit located beneath the wing. The landing gear consisted of a single sprung skid under the fuselage and a small tailwheel on the ventral fin.
Histoire résumée
Plusieurs records furent établis avec le SH-5 : distances de 60 puis 140 kilomètres en 1933, altitude par Dimitri Aleksandrovich Koshits en 1935. Le 11 mai 1935, le même Koshits réalisa un vol longue distance de 5025 km à travers les montagnes du Caucase avec le SH-5 remorqué par un Polikarpov R-5, à une altitude atteignant 3200 m, en 34 heures de vol.
Le SH-5 fut produit en Turquie par la firme THK, sous le nom de THK-9 et aussi par MKEK, sous le nom de MKEK 7, en 1952.
